As the Tutorial was attended last week I have asked and received redirected study at home.
Critical & Contextual Studies
The previous discussion of the essay with the tutor had given a homework task for this week.
After the tutor reviewed the homework I am now working on the 2nd draft of the essay.  The 2nd draft due in next week – no worries then ha!
The tutor e-mailed the feedback of the 2o slide PowerPoint presentation. I have to make a few changes but it seems to be minor ones.

Week beginning 17 March 2014 - Circles of my mind

Circles of my mind
On Monday I was given a gift of insight with imagery of ever decreasing circles.
The project has been circling around an idea.     The next circle of research will focused the project idea and concept

Prize Winner!
A phone call from Falkirk Campus LRC staff brightens my day.   I have won 2nd prize in their book competition. Maybe this is a sign that my luck is changing.
My Luck continued
Wednesday, I checked Moodle to confirm that there had been no changes to PDP tutorial dates.
After travelling on 2 buses I arrived at the Stirling Campus to be told the tutorial week had been changed.  An email was sent to the full time BAD3 notifying them of the changes.  Unfortunately, as part timer, I am not on that mailing list.  Lucky for me another BAD3 colleague was not able to attend so I was allocated that tutorial space.  Thankfully all is well with the PDP brief and I have a note of the date changes to the tutorials.
Critical & Contextual Studies
The remainder of the BAD2 class Power Point Presentations took place.  I spoke with the tutor in regard to the essay's lack of  progress.

Week beginning: 10 March 2014 - New Frontiers

Art Project
As a part timer I am not joining the rest of the 2013-14 BAD3 group in their final project.  So I have set myself a challenge with an art project.
Photo Etching Process
I had made arrangement with the Printing technician, Jessica Crisp to come in on Monday for a tutorial of the Photo etching process.
The car journey into campus was kindly accommodated by a BAD3A colleague.
The day began with a new frontier into Photo etching with a tutorial by Jessica Crisp, printing technician.
Jessica Crisp supplied the copper plate and the next stage was to clean it.  Oh the glamour of the art world!

The whole photo etching process took a day to accomplish a finished photo etched copper plate.

At the end of a long tiring college day, the photo etched copper plate was then ready for the intaglio printing process. As time was short I was limited with my intaglio experimentations to one with paper and two textile samples.

The Intaglio experimentations revealed the potentials of this process.
In retrospect this is a long complex process. I will now need time to rest up to allow the old artistic juices to flow.  The Photo etching process requires access to staff, equipment and supplies.  As access can be restricted or not easily obtained this will be a problem to consider for the project.  The process will be also be restricted by the cost of supplies and limit the project experimentation.
PDP
I requested redirected study via e-mail to tutor, Paul.  This was accepted by another staff member as Paul is unwell.  Get well soon Paul.
The promotional material requires quality paper.  I have again had another discussion with the supplier of the quality paper.  He has promised to get it this time.  Can I depend on this?  As experience has showed that this may not happen I have an alternative source in the local shops.  It is an expensive option but reliable.  As I have a tutorial next week I can wait a couple of days and see what happens.
The purchase of a professional A4 traditional portfolio has met the brief requirements.
The portfolio inserts require quality photographic imagery.  The poor quality of Raploch campus colour printer led to research of alternative sources.
A discussion with colleague of possible sources indicated that the Local Supermarket has poor quality of colour imagery.
A visit to the Falkirk campus to preview their 2 colour printer quality revealed a slight improvement of imagery.
The purchase of ink cartridges for my own printer will be followed by the purchase of photographic paper as soon as finances allow.
Critical & Contextual Studies
I spent a lot of time working hard on the essay in preparation for the meeting in Falkirk campus.
The meeting led to further amendments.  After mutual agreement I have postposed the next week’s meeting.
2nd draft recycling PowerPoint Petcha Kutcha Presentation
The process of matching my words to imagery within a timed period required practice.  This practice allowed amendments before the big day.
On Friday, the recycling PowerPoint presentation took place in front of my BAD2 colleagues.  The tutor will give feedback on the PowerPoint presentation.
Congratulations
My fellow BAD2 colleagues also presented their own Petcha Kutcha PowerPoints.  Each colleague had very interesting and different subject matter.  I must pass on my congratulations to all the BAD2 who bravely tackled this task.

Week beginning Monday 3rd March 2014 - Bright Ideas

Bright Ideas for Project
After review of Glasgow Printmakers Visit I was inspired with ideas for a wee project.
Project Idea
After initial project ideas the next stage was to consider a creative path that can bring the ideas together.  I had a photographic image and wanted to find the alternative methods of transferring the image onto textiles.

Initial Research
A browse through the books in the (LRC) Learning Resource Centre uncovered an interesting read about photo montage artist, John Heartfield.
The printmaker’s website
I was inspired by etching with photographic film.  As this is an unfamiliar process, I have made arranged for tutorial with Jessica Crisp, the printing technician.
Preparation for the Photo Etching tutorial
·         Scanned the photographic image and converted into Photoshop computer programme.
·         Altered the image size to the match the ‘Photec’ film.
·         Transferred altered photographic image onto acetate.

PDP
The purchase of the professional A4 traditional portfolio case and A4 inserts will help meet the brief requirements.
As the college colour printer has not produced good quality images I will need to source a decent photocopier elsewhere.  Unfortunately, due the costs of the failed printing I will need to postpone further colour printing.
I had to bite the bullet this week and venture back into the wix website.  The setting up of a website has been a chore that has taken a large amount of time.  This is mainly due to the difficulties with the instructions on setting up the slide show of images.  After a deal of discussion with the computer I have managed to create a slide show of images.  That little spider web needs a lot of try, try and try again.
Critical & Contextual Studies
A lot of work put into the essay this week ready for my contact meeting.
The meeting in the Falkirk Campus LRC was helpful and have arranged to meet again next week.

As this class was a repeat of last week I had asked and received permission for redirected study.  This time was well spent with practices sessions for the 2nd draft presentation scheduled for next week.   The Petcha Kutcha Presentation needs to match the timing of the 20 slides with the words and remember it.

The old mantra of practice makes perfect will hopefully work!  Fingers crossed for next week.

Week beginning 24 February 2014 End of an era

                                                 Return to the Falkirk Campus
                                                 Critical & Contextual Studies
A return to the Falkirk campus was a very nostalgic trip down memory lane. I fair miss the earlier art journey of Higher, advance higher and the HND in the Falkirk campus.  The reason for this visit to the Falkirk campus was to meet with the contact for essay.  This has been a useful exercise that will be repeated next week.
PDP
This week had a scheduled tutorial meeting to discuss my progress with the brief.

Discussed promotional material costs
Discussed A3 Portfolio case & difficulties with college photocopier colour image quality
Purchased & Cut black paper to A3 portfolio size

Critical & Contextual Studies
This week was a drop in session with the tutor.  It was a short opportunity to discuss the amended Recycling PowerPoint presentation with the tutor.  I had printed out the 20 slide PowerPoint images with script notes and the feedback was ok.  I took the opportunity to discuss the essay progress and was reassurance that there will time to review the essay.
