Critical and Contextual Studies

Focusing on the essay content and backing up my words with sources has given an insight to the purpose of Critical and Contextual Studies.  Hopefully, the insight from the essay will improve my future artistic projects.

The recycling Essay focused on recycling practices of ‘make do and mend’ and upcycling with artist Robert Rauschenberg and Susan Stockwell. 

I have developed a more in depth understanding of the recycling practices and the working practices of each artist. 

The final tutorial

A  Cosplay PowerPoint presentation by one of my class colleagues was very interesting as I had not encountered this topic before.

I had the opportunity to discuss with the tutor any amendments to the essay before next week’s hand in.

 A few chances and hopefully, I will achieve a passing grade at the end to the Course. 

PDP

The tutor notified the class to pick up all the material we handed in for assessment.   So the good news is that the tutor has looked over everyone’s work and requires the room to be emptied for the upcoming college exhibition.  The bad news is carrying all my stuff back home!  Never mind it was a nice day.

Glasgow School of Art Fire

The news on 23 May 2014 of a fire at the Glasgow School of Art is a sad day for the Architecture world and the city of Glasgow.  Luckily, no one was hurt.

Week Beginning 19^th May 2014 – Critical endings

After the PDP presentation I needed to find out what the procedure was now for PDP attendance.  The good news is that I don’t need to attend Stirling campus for PDP until early June.   This will free up my time for the Critical and contextual essay.

Critical and contextual Essay

The tutor returned the 2^nd draft essay.  After reviewing the comments I have amended the immediate errors.  However the referencing of Harvard system required a revisit to the Website http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/referencing/harvard.htm.  .  A joy!

This task was combined with working with the word document toolbar reference system.

It is frustrating how technology that is there to help can make the task even more complicated.

 

Week Beginning 12 May 2014 Presentation Week

The final brief for PDP required a presentation. I had previously prepared the A2 mount board and a PowerPoint.

The PowerPoint slides were not used and the brief presentation had required 2 mount boards.
                                     
                                               5 minute class presentation
The presentation proceeded with the display and discussion of the Mount board with promotional materials: business card, Artist statement, compliment slip, letterhead and invoice. The presentation progressed to a display of the website via the class computer overhead display. The display of the website had technical difficulties that resulted in the website freezing half way through my presentation.

 Overall, the evaluation of the promotional materials presentation has been a challenge with the computer technical difficulties. The blog update with the artist statement was attached as a separate page and on the Information section.

                                             Contextual and Critical Studies
A final polish of the essay benefited from the tutor’s return of the 2nd draft.

                                            Another day and another presentation
 The final 20 slide PowerPoint Presentation of the recycling topic set to a 20 second timing went well. The tutor gave the class the good news that everyone has passed.

Each class member has a scheduled tutorial over the next 2 weeks to discuss the final essay submission.

Artist Statement: Sheena Urquhart

The themes of my work concentrate on empowerment of the individual to achieve life’s dreams. The main aim of my work is to bring art to everyone within the community. Each person can participate with artwork exploration and experimentation to widen their variety of visual imagery. My primary concern is each person’s participation with art projects that can widen their perspective on life dreams. In order to achieve this I will take the opportunity to provide art workshops with a wide variety of art mediums.

Mount boards ready for final presentation on 14 May 2014. 

The website has been amended after comments received from friends and family.

I will prepare a 5 minute presentation

Received the note book from the college with the read write programme just in time for essay’s final proofing  

I was unable to receive the 2^nd draft essay as the lecturer was not available.

After much thought I decided to contact a local printer to arrange a limited number of business cards and compliment slips.  

The printer had difficulty working the promotional material I had produced on the publisher programme.  The printer suggested using Photoshop or Illustrator for promotional material.  

 The difficulty with this suggestion is that I am unfamiliar with Illustrator and my Photoshop expertise does not extend to business cards and compliment slips.  I will need to ask for a quick tutorial next time.

 The Printer overcame the publisher programme difficulties and I received the promotional material.  The Printer’s expense was balanced with achieving the PDP brief requirements for a professional finish for promotional material.

I will be preparing the mount boards for the presentation on the 14^th May. 

Contextual and Critical Studies

 The notebook has not been returned from support staff due to technical difficulties.  In other words they can’t get the read programme to work.  I am glad to know that the difficulty was not just my old jink with new technology. 

I requested and received redirected study for Friday Class.  The tutor’ e-mailed my Essay feedback.  I was surprised by his positive comments.  I will need to amend the section with the recycling practice make do and mend and the conclusion.  Miracles do happen it seems!  

The 20 slide presentation has been amended with less text and removal of repeated imagery.  I will need to adjust the script so that the presentation is less rushed. Website
