Artist Statement

The brief‘s Multiples theme is based on Edinburgh buildings.  The visual elements of Edinburgh architectural buildings explored as a textile concept with surface pattern repetition of shape, negative and positive spaces, rhythms, intervals.
The textile surface patterns explored different repeat format imagery with different art mediums.  Surface pattern repeat formats explored in hand drawn and photographic imagery.  These varied surface pattern images transferred onto textile mediums of  silk, muslin and satin achieved with a variety of techniques; gutta, fine line pen, Gum Arabic,  mono printing,  fabric medium, and cyanotype.
The textile surface pattern presented as a metal artist book.  The skeleton metal book achieved by welding tutorial was spray painted black.  The hand stitched recycled scrim textile covering inscribed with gutta title and subject matter chosen to provide multiple visuals representing the brief’s multiples theme.  The book’s front cover surface pattern Edinburgh Building imagery identifies subject matter and introduces the following metal pages.
The hand stitched inside front cover is a combined fabric medium Edinburgh street signs imagery layered over Gum Arabic fine line pen drawing of Edinburgh architectural buildings.  The subtle information of street names visually informs and contributes to the aesthetics of the artist book.
The following 4 metal pages illustrated varied surface pattern progression until final A3 back cover of silk gum Arabic fine line pen repeat pattern hand stitched onto recycled black scrim.
The additional light source brings visual definition to the Artist book
