Week ending 24 April 2015 – Embroidery Presentation

Description
Local Picture Framers

A visit to the local picture framer confirmed her availability to mount work onto 2 acrylic panels with stand-off locators. The discussion of the presentation of textile and mixed media artwork resulted in agreement on the required materials.

layers of Place

Layers of Self

The materials to complete the mount presentation required quality paper.  This paper was sourced via college.

Textile and mixed media artwork
The presentation of textiles and mixed media artwork with layers of textiles with image transfer, paper and acetate will investigate alternative solutions.  The layer of A4 acetate photographic imagery will investigate different sized acetate imagery.

3rd Acrylic panel and standoff locators
A 3rd acrylic panel with standoff locators was sourced as an alternative or in addition to the embroidery panel.

The photographs sound story recorded on IPhone as a MPEG4i file.  This file format will not download onto the website.
A consultation with technician to convert MPEG4i file format into MP3 was unsuccessful.

Embroidery Panel
The embroidery panel sourced a chrome curtain rail mount to match the standoff locators to link with the presentation.

The chrome curtain rail attached a hanging embroidery panel onto the wall.  The hanging embroidery panel of plastic soluble material had water applied.  The water dissolved the plastic soluble material and the embroidery was stretched and distorted.

3D fold Memory Book
The 3D fold memory book created the A3 template for background imagery. The A3 template constructed with abstract photographic imagery.   The transfer of A3 photographic imagery was double sided photocopied onto A3 carriage paper.

The A3 carriage paper cut into squares and folded into a 3 Dimensional book.

Storage Box
A collection of photographic imagery.

Tutorial Feedback
The layout of the project presentation received positive comment from the tutor.  The tutorial suggested exploring alternative acetate sizes in the layout of the textiles and mixed media artwork presentation.

The opportunity to discuss the project with another tutor has contributed additional insight and received positive feedback to the contextual theme.

Research Folder
I have received inspiration from the Family photographs and the Sunday Mail article of 21.09.14 p42 written by Jenny Morrison – Doc reveals how Dementia patient’s designer dresses reminded her of happier times.

Using clothes to reminiscence helps the person with dementia and her carers know the person behind the patient.  Dementia presentation to Nurses gives insight to Dementia patients as individual personality and a better understanding of his/her needs and strengthen his/her sense of identity.  Time well spent getting to know the person “some peoples’ identities may be closely linked to their love of football, cooking, music, their story and the way it helped carers better understand her personality and needs show the importance of gathering detailed histories of those with dementia” Source  Professor  Wylie McKissock

·         PLP Research: Susan Sontag – Source http://www.salon.com/2014/01/05/war_photography_partner/

On Photography (1977), Susan Sontag argued that a photograph alone cannot determine an event; rather, an event must precede a photo. Looking at a photograph, there must be a pre-existing awareness of the event depicted in the viewer’s mind for any kind of moral response to take place—something like a photo slotting into the sleeve of a photo album

The story behind photographs can trigger memories.  The photograph can be used to reminiscence and help the person with dementia and their carers know the person.  The project’s use of photographs can meet the PLP sense of self and place.

·         Extended research: John Berger’s book “Ways of Seeing”

A camera reproduces how we see the world.  The photograph seeing different objects in a different context.  The context of your own life.  The familiarity of your life builds memory and everything around confirms and isolates its meaning.  Photography is a neutral means of communication.

Business Card
Discussed arrangements for the business card. The design will be finalised and ready for next week.

Feeling
A society that is seeing an individual and not the label of memory loss.  The loss of memory stigma can be lost by highlighting the issue.  The void of memory loss caught by photographs.     The sense of fragility from old photographs represent the fragility of memories.  The social document of optimism around the photo will fit well with celebratory response to this project.

Evaluation
The purchase of project materials has impacted the budget costs:

·         A2 quality paper for the picture framer
  • colour photocopying of double sided A3 carriage paper
·         acetates

Embroidery Plastic Stabiliser
Application of water has stretched and distorted the random machine stitching and hand embroidery of black work.  As a solution Added supporting nails around the embroidery and under the curtain rail.  The embroidery panel separated from the wall with wooden panels to prevent sticking.

3 fold Memory Book
Difficulties with colour printer impacted time required to complete the printing tasks

·         Printing photographic images

·         A3 Template of abstract photographic imagery

·         A3 carriage sheets double sided photocopy of template

·         Cutting A3 photocopied sheets into squares

·         Folding squares into 3 dimensional folds

Acetate
Difficulties with colour printer limited access to acetate image sizes.   Alternative solution to access another campus location with a colour printer

Analysis
Dealing with memory problems

There are many different types of memory loss. The different memory loss labels have universal social stigma.
By not labelling the many types of memory loss directly I can subliminally make a social comment that raises awareness and lessen the stigma.  Therefore I feel I can justify not labelling individual memory loss with a non-threatening artwork project.

A non-threatening artwork medium of textiles, family photographs and image transfer is universally familiar.
The use of use of photographs to help aid memory strategies is validated by Dementia research.  Photographs create cognitive stimulation that help can communicate the unique story of the individual and help carers find solutions.
By finding a positive approach to memory loss I can raise awareness and initiate discussion in the community to find positive solutions.

Conclusion
The time plan of the project is on track and the construction process has alternative solutions that can be explored.

The embroidery plastic stabiliser will require additional reflective time for analysis.

Action Plan
Next week’s class has been allocated as redirected study.

Investigate the photograph sound story recordings.
